Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Award: 3 alumni students, Susana Cámara Leret / Mike Thompson and Tiddo Bakker won the price for Desingers & Artists 4 Genomics Award!

The Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Award highlights and explores the exciting and novel possibilities between design, artistic practice and life sciences. Conceived by the Netherlands Genomics Initiative, the Centre for Society and Genomics, and Waag Society, the Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Award aims to stimulate emerging designers and artists to delve into the world of bio-art, and produce new work in close collaboration with the Netherlands most prestigious Genomics Centres, for example in the fields of sustainability, food, health, bio-informatics, agriculture, and safety.

Aqua Vita, the proposal by Susana Cámara Leret, Mike Thompson and the Netherlands Metabolomics Centre, assumes that urine is not just bodily waste, but consists of rich information and presents us with valuable insights into our lifestyle. Aqua Vita combines advanced metabolomics technology with traditional Chinese medicine and visualizes this information into a diary.

Interactive plant medium
In Vena Verbum makes people aware of the fact that plants are much more than static, decorative objects. Tiddo Bakker and the Centre for BioSystems Genomics let us discover the hidden world of plants by developing a medium that measures the activity of the chloroplasts and shows that the plant continually responds to its environment. The medium gives the plant a proverbial voice.

The winners were each awarded with €25,000 to be spent on the realization of their proposal, which will be presented at Naturalis from mid June until the end of December 2012.
