Paolo Patelli (Associate Reader “Places and Traces”) and Giuditta Vendrame (MA Social Design, DAE alumna ’15) have been selected to contribute to WORK, BODY, LEISURE, the Dutch Pavilion at the 16th Venice International Architecture Biennale in 2018, curated by Marina Otero Verzier (Director of Research at Het Nieuwe Instituut). Giuditta and Paolo will present a film project, “Shore Leaves”, a visual investigation of the entanglements of individual rights and international mobility, human presence and the labor still essential in cargo shipping, even as crewless ships are announced and automated docks developed. The video is an intimate portrait of the gestures and routines of the sailors on shore leave, when their bodies are temporarily freed from work, but can hardly perform significant actions. The work of associations and cooperatives providing seafarers assistance and welfare in the ports of Rotterdam and Venice is also documented.
