DAE’s Readership in Strategic Creativity invites students with an interest in textiles and design research to join a two week programme in Kyoto this summer from July 22 to August 6.
We’ll collaborate with students and experts from the KYOTO Design Lab of Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT), Royal College of Art (RCA) and others. The theme of the programme is New Materials, Old Challenges, Old Materials, New challenges. We will explore new opportunities for traditional and experimental Japanese textiles, using a design approach. Joining you during this programme is Michelle Baggerman, research associate at the Readership in Strategic Creativity, who has done an extensive design research project at KIT, collaborating with Japanese textile producers and developing new ways to work with fine Japanese silk.
Programme:
The first week will be spent at Tango Peninsula, where we’ll visit and study different weaving firms specialized in traditional and new techniques, and do a workshop at the Kyoto Prefectural Textile Research Centre with local producers. The second week is spent in Kyoto where we’ll visit
several textile centers and continue with a four day workshop at KIT in collaboration with the department of Advanced Fibro-Science and the department of Bio-Based materials. During the weekends you are free to make your own plans.
The results of the project will be presented in a bi-lingual publication with contributions from everyone involved. We will also show the results during DDW. This summerschool is a great opportunity to in a short time gain understanding and experience of Japan’s textile industry, both historically and contemporary. You will get a taste of professional collaborations between designers and other experts from different backgrounds, and you will return with an international network of talented peers to work with.
Application:
This opportunity is open to all students from the 2nd year and up, including MA students. There is a limited number of places available, so there will be a selection. If you are interested in joining, please send in a short motivation (max. 1A4 ex. images) in which you introduce yourself and describe what you hope to bring to and gain from the project by using examples of your work. The application deadline is June 15th. We will review the applications and be in touch in the following week.
Costs:
Accommodation and travel during the programme is arranged by KIT and will cost ¥150.000 (approx. €1200) per participant. Flights to Japan and insurance should be arranged by each individual participant (prices for direct flights between Amsterdam and Osaka KIX average around €800 for a return flight). Materials for the workshops are included, meals and other expenses are not.
Please send your application or any questions you have to michelle.baggerman@gmail.com
