A logo is a graphic trademark, icon or symbol adopted by an organization to identify its services or trades. Logos remain the most powerful and contentious aspect of visual communication, but are contemporary marks losing a sense of craftsmanship and beauty? Are they a legacy from another era? Do logos, by themselves, still have resonance and importance?
These and other issues will be discussed with various designers from the old and new guard. Speakers include Aad van Dommelen (Witvorm), Maureen Mooren and Jacques Koeweiden (Koeweiden Postma). Hosted by Declan Stone from The Stone Twins.
Declan Stone is co-author of the book ‘Logo R.I.P.’, which is reissued in a fully updated and revised 2012 edition. One of the book's themes is that many icons from the Golden Age of logo design (1950s - 1970s) are replaced by bland, generic and poorly-crafted trademarks. In fact, he argues that much of contemporary corporate identity design is fueled by marketing-driven nonsense at the expense of coherent graphic signatures that are rich in concept, emotion and stylistic durability.
