DAE alumna Marije Vogelzang has her own vision of designers who work with the subject of food. Marije says: “Eating design is to design from the verb ‘to eat!’.” Food is already perfectly designed by nature. Instead, her designs focus around the verb 'to eat'.
Marije gives a lot of lectures and workshops at different places in the world. For example she gave a lecture for the 31st International foodservice forum in Hamburg two weeks ago. Marije says: “I experienced a hugely interesting line up ranging from Matteo Thun to Burgerking and Andre Sarrasani from the famous Sarrasani Circus.” In addition she went to Delhi to speak and do a workshop at the amazing UNBOX festival last month. The festival celebrates interdisciplinary processes and experiences that shape contemporary thought and action.
At this moment she is making a design for a signature food installation for design hotels that they will use at their various functions around the globe. Also she has plans to go to New York at the beginning of May for the world's first ever Food Book Fair in Brooklyn (New York). An exciting event organized by Elizabeth Thacker Jones.
Marije Vogelzang is inspired by the origin of food and the preparation, etiquette, history and culture around it. For this reason, she doesn't consider herself a 'food designer', but as the first 'eating designer' in The Netherlands. "There is no material that comes as close to human beings as food."
It is often thought that designers who work with food only design the shape of it. Vogelzang's aim is to look at the content and background of the food as well; the shape is just a tool to tell a story.
