Hestia
What: An indoor fireplace that reinstates the importance of fire in our lives, but without the smoke, smell or danger.
Why: The discovery of fire was a huge step for mankind; we have used it ever since for warmth, protection, food and light. But with overpopulation, deforestation and pollution, fire has lost its fame and has disappeared from our houses.
How: Named after the fiery Greek goddess, ‘Hestia’ revives the flames with a safe and smoke-free ‘fireplate’. Made of reinforced concrete mixed with cotton fibres, it burns on a sip of pure alcohol. Placing fireproof items on top of it partly blocks the flames, and it becomes a shrine for personal items.
