Human and Machine
Human and Machine is an educational programme created for Design Academy Eindhoven to support students in developing their own manufacturing techniques, tools and machines for making design. The four-year Bachelor department provides practical and critical skills that draw on research, collaboration and experimentation, taking inspiration from both ancient crafts and new digital technologies to help students develop their future work methodology while addressing personal interests and shared needs.
Classes may be held in a classroom or workshop, at cultural or technology events, but they can also take place in a remote corner of the world as the department ventures out regularly on field trips. This is done to bring academy students face to face with situations of economic inequality, ecological degradation or abundant resources. Through a collaborative workshop, students will engage in theory and practice with local people to build small-scale manufacturing systems together and test academic ideas in real-world situations.
Human and Machine brings together international students, machine-maker alumni, technicians, theorists, critics, craftsmen, bio hackers, inventors and the industry, to design mechanisms that will reshape making, design and livelihoods.
