Memories of the Future Self

The visual essay ‘Memories of the Future Self’ is an analysis
of our many identities, online and offline, and the influence
of technology on our behaviour and desires. It was born from
Darunee Terdtoontaveedej’s research into the meaning of
‘home’ in the 21st century.
Home, says Terdtoontaveedej, is a place of refuge and safety in
an emotional and psychological sense. Rather than a place, it
is a mental construct: a daydream world that meets our deepest
desires. Following this train of thought, the act of constructing
our virtual identities is an act of building a home.
When social media were introduced, they allowed us to explore
this process in the presumed safety of anonymity. However,
what we perceive as private is becoming increasingly public:
with technology gaining an ever greater presence in our daily
lives, we are losing ownership of our identities. Terdtoontaveedej
questions the evolution of the self in this light and asks: what
if our ‘home’ is forever lost?
