They Are Us
The so-called ‘refugee crisis’ is having a huge impact on German society. As more and more people from different nations arrive seeking shelter, some members of the population are becoming hostile. ‘They are Us’ puts the recent surge in migration in a historical context, showing that only 70 years ago many Germans were refugees themselves. The project provides an eyewitness account of the mass evictions of Danube Swabians during and after the second world war. The aim is to evoke empathy among Germans for all who are forced to leave their homes to try and make a living somewhere else.
