Amid growing nationalism, Juliette Pepin believes that it is high time to foster tolerance towards cultural diversity in schools. ‘M.O.T.S.’ (French for ‘words’) introduces five-year olds to different languages before prejudice can take hold. By playing with stamps, memory games, stencils and flashcards, children learn about up to 26 tongues, from Korean to Greek and Arabic to Punjabi. Along with the games is an online platform (www.m-o-t-s.net) where teachers and individual users can get information, share ideas and experiences, or add new translations. Created in collaboration with a preschool in the Parisian suburbs, now the programme can be developed for a broader target group by working with different schools.
