Research shows that children’s imaginative powers are waning under the strain of new technology, as mobile devises replace construction-type toys. In moderation, technology and screens are useful, but many children today are far beyond moderate use. Willeke Scholl’s ‘Imaginets’ balances the scales and combines physical play and digital play. Taking construction toys to a whole new level, Imaginets consists of a special play mat and flat, magnetic bricks. These are combined with augmented reality technology to enhance the structures on-screen, offering challenging new possibilities for the fantastic worlds children create for themselves.
