Exploring cultural borders
Growing up near one of the First Nations Reserves in Alberta, Canada, Marina Hulzenga was fascinated by the differences between her own world and that of her Aboriginal neighbours. In the summer of 2014 she went back to find out more about the physical, mental and social borders separating 140 reserves from the rest of the province. “I want to show what is happening at the moment the two cultures meet,” says Marina. The results of her research are captured in a book, film and installation that address the experiences at these borders: from language barriers to the absence of maps, or the feeling of gravel versus paved roads. The installation opens the door for dialogue, illuminating matters that can be recognised on a global scale.
