TimeMaps
Relative distance, i.e. the time needed to go from A to B, is shrinking. “Thanks to today’s efficient infrastructure, we think more in terms of time and less in kilometres. Maps as we know them are behind the times,” says Vincent Meertens. His TimeMaps are based on travel time from a certain location. The Netherlands, for example, seen from Eindhoven, is relatively small; from the village Stavoren it looks bigger already. The time of day also has a big influence; at night the map expands as there are no trains, and as the sun rises it shrinks again. The map of the Netherlands will never be the same again.
