LANGUAGE AS AN INSPIRATION FOR DESIGN
Language as a system for design inspirations – Chin Pong
(Michael) Leung and Hoi Nap (Rony) Chan researched a design
strategy that is based on language. Languages might be relevant
tools for the design process, as they reflect tradition, history, and
define cultural differences to a large extent. Where design asks for
variety, language might offer an inspiring way of creating it.
The Chinese and English languages were analyzed, turned upside
down and reinterpreted by the two designers. What is lost in
translation? What is gained? And how can both languages lead
to shapes and functionalities? Vice versa, how can design express
the Chinese concept of the void?
