REMEMBERING OUR INDUSTRIAL PAST
The seven villages surrounding Eindhoven once knew blooming
industries of their own, revolving around locally sourced raw
materials. In Best, for instance, the poplar trees in and around the
village were used in the clog-making industry. And the heathlands
just outside Geldrop were used to graze sheep that would
supply the wool mills with wool. The industries disappeared as
the competition from outside Europe became too strong, but
they have left a lasting impression on each of the villages. With
Seven Museums, Rachel Santegoets has brought the industrial
past back to life. Her virtual passe-partouts place the remaining
factories back into the landscape that supplied the raw materials.
Old factories come back to life among the poplars, heath, flax and
wheat in her characteristic round frames.
