A VOID CAN BECOME A VESSEL
What is a void? Is it space? Air? Nothingness? Jonas Lutz has
explored the ways in which the void acquires form and function,
or to put it in his own words: ‘how does the void become a
vessel?’ By chiselling and gouging away at a block of plaster he
has created an ever bigger void. Lutz then caught the void in an
earthenware cast, activating the void’s nothingness and turning
it into a vessel. As he continued to expand the void, the mould
became ever more fragile, until it became impossible to produce a
cast. In the final stage, the mould disintegrated and became an art
object in which a series of empty moulds or vessels demonstrates
the different stages of the research. Each shape in Void – Vessel
is a document of the captured space.
